With a bone pull adorning the lid, this neat little container brings simple African style to the home or office.
A collective of rural women in the Machakos area of Kenya crafts this useful storage container from sisal, a tough agave plant with thick, spiky leaves. Sisal was introduced to East Africa as a cash crop, and today it grows prolifically on plantations in Kenya and Tanzania. Rural Kamba people use sisal plants as boundaries dividing their properties, and the ability to turn this plentiful plant material into useful creations brings supplemental income to over 900 families in the area.
