This 9" basket in brown, orange and pale green was hand-crafted by a woman in Swaziland in the traditional Nguni coil style. Using spun-dyed sisal grass coiled around a strand of local basket grass, the weaver must make precise calculations to create the intricate geometric patterns. It can take up to 30 hours to weave a single basket. The weaving takes place in weekly gatherings of women from remote villages as they come together not only to preserve a traditional art form, but also to earn an income to fight extreme poverty and pay for their family's school fees and health care costs.
