A group of artisans in Dakar, Senegal, hand paint the art in these useful and chic handmade serving trays using a reverse glass method. Called
fixe in Senegal, reverse glass painting has its roots in Senegal's Muslim history, and reaches back as an art form through the centuries and across borders.
Reverse glass painting was widely used for religious paintings in the Middle Ages, most famously in the icons of the Byzantine Empire. Later, painting on glass spread to Italy and became favored by the Church and the nobility throughout Central Europe.
The technique involves applying paint in layers, in reverse order, on the back of a piece of glass then turning the glass over to view the finished painting through the glass.
