Tree of Life Applique Wall Hanging - Red

$48.00

Indian artisans combine two ancient art forms in this impressive wall hanging. Taking inspiration from the folk art known as Mandana, a single piece of red fabric is appliquéd onto a beige panel using small hand stitches to create a tree of life motif. Stylized images of people and animals surround the tree.

Mandana is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Mandan’, which means ‘to invent’. Mandana paintings were traditionally used to adorn the mud walls of Rajasthani homes and sacred spaces in the belief that their positive energy would ward off demons and evil spirits and welcome in the gods. Today Mandana is disappearing due to the dwindling number of mud homes so the intricacies of the art must find expression in other mediums.
